Preparation for Colonoscopy


 

Instructions for colonoscopy preparation 

                            

Seven days before your procedure:  stop taking aspirin or aspirin products(continue if taking for heart disease or stroke prevention). This includes: Motrin, Naprosyn, Iron tablets, Multi-Vitamins, Vitamin E, Arthritis medications, Goody Powders, BC powders, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen.  You may take Tylenol Arthritis or plain Tylenol. STOP Coumadin, Heparin, Warfarin, Plavix, PRADAXA, Pletal, or any blood thinners,after discussing this with your prescribing Dr.  NO CORN OR POPCORN!

Two days before procedure Take (1) Dulcolax OR BISACOYDL tablet at 7:00p.m.. (Get over the counter). Do not eat anything solid after this, just clear liquids.  (see below)

One day before your procedure: drink clear liquids only this day!!   You may choose from the following list of clear liquids:  Example:  Water, Children’s Pedialyte, Clear soft drinks (Sprite, 7UP, Mtn. Dew, Sundrop, Ginger Ale), Pepsi and Coke-cola, Apple Juice, White Grape Juice, Tea, Coffee (Black or with sugar only), Chicken or Beef Bouillon or Broth (fat free), Kool-Aid, Popsicles, Gatorade, Jell-O and Hard Candy. Avoid red coloring.  no milk or milk products.  no alcoholic beverages.  Drink lots of clear liquids this day!

The night before procedure at 9-10 pm: drink 1 bottle of Suprep (brand name) or ½ of the gallon solution(generic). follow with two more glasses of clear liquids.  

The day of the procedure at 4 am or 5 hours before the procedure drink the 2nd bottle of Suprep or remaining half of the gallon solution. Follow with two more glasses of clear liquids.

Day of procedure:  Clear liquids only until  2hrs before procedure then absolutely nothing by mouth  except medications.

Medications

 If you are on medications, which you must take (such as heart or blood pressure medications)  Please  take these medications the morning of your procedure.

If you are a diabetic, take half dose of your medication on the day prior to the procedure and do not take any diabetic medication day of your procedure. 

If you use inhalers, use them the morning of your scope if needed.  Bring your inhaler with you. 

If you are a smoker, please refrain from smoking after midnight the day of your scope. 

If you have sleep apnea, please bring your c-pap machine with you.

You must have a driver or some arranged transportation to drive you home or your procedure will be cancelled.  You will be sedated.
